During his time in the Marines, he developed an interest in boxing, which later played a significant role in his portrayal of Paulie in the Rocky series.

Young’s first acting role came in 1969 in the television series ‘The Doctors’, where he played an uncredited role of a bartender.
His breakthrough came when he starred in the Rocky franchise alongside Sylvester Stallone. His performance in the first Rocky film (1976) earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Apart from his acting career, Young was also a talented writer and painter. He wrote two stage plays, including ‘SOS’, and a historical novel titled ‘Endings’. Some of his artwork was even featured in the 2006 film, ‘Rocky Balboa’.
Upon hearing the news of Young’s passing, Sylvester Stallone, his co-star in the Rocky series, paid a heartfelt tribute on his Instagram page. He shared a throwback image of himself with Young on the set of the classic film, expressing his deep sorrow and admiration for the late actor.
